TUNE: Earlier this summer, critics fawned over Jon Hopkins’s “Immunity,” a masterfully crafted electronic album with eerie depth and carefully applied strokes of ambient spirituality. For a remix of “Breathe This Air,” Purity Ring’s Megan James provides her signature light-as-air vocals, turning Hopkins’s dark and cathartic synth-driven landscape into a haunting lullaby, hovering over a repetition of melodic keys. After hearing this version (and by hearing, we obviously mean listening to it on repeat for an hour because it’s that good), it’s almost hard not to feel as if something’s missing from the original.
BY: Producer-turned-musician Jon Hopkins, who before putting out his own string of albums worked with artists like Coldplay, Brian Eno, and Massive Attack, in addition to providing gorgeous scores for movies like ”The Lovely Bones” and “Monsters.”
CURRENTLY: In addition to touring for the next few months, Hopkins will be playing shows with Purity Ring on August 27 and 28 at the Henry Fonda Theatre in L.A., where the remix will be released on a limited-edition 12″.
